Puffy |
Nissekatt began its
history many years ago with one very special cat from a barn in
Connecticut. The barn belonged to a cousin and there were kittens
and cats of all colors but they all looked alike...they were beautiful
longhaired cats. My choice was a beautiful Brown Torbie and White
Female we named Puffy. Puffy was Sue's constant companion
throughout her childhood through to her senior year in High School when
she left for the Rainbow Bridge. At one of her trips to the vet for her
yearly shots, we met a woman who bred Maine Coons and she insisted Puffy
was a Maine Coon. |

After we lost Puff I
started to look for a Maine Coon and Zazzara Cattery was born. I
started breeding Maine Coons in 1977. Their look was changing at
the time and although I loved the breed I was disappointed not to find
one that looked like my first Maine Coon. In 1979, I saw an
article about Norwegian Forest Cats in Cats Magazine and it was love at
first site. I knew I just had to have one. I promptly wrote
to Norway after the article appeared and received a wonderful letter
back from Solveig Stenersrod, the secretary for Norsk Skogkattring
offering me a Brown Tabby Male and a Black & White Female. I have
to admit that I am not overly fond of Black and Whites so I said I would
wait until a Brown Tabby female became available. She was born in
November of 1979, the same month the first pair I was offered arrived in
the USA. |
Yago produced the first
surviving litter in the United States in March of 1981. The sire was
Pans Tigris of Mycoon bred by Else Nylund and owned by Sheila R. Gira.
The male went to Sheila was named Zazzara's Vigi and Kisi, the female
went to a new breeder in Florida. In 1982, I partnered with Mary
Buckmaster (MaryB's Cathouse) and we brought in Mjavos Saugtier (Yago's
mother), Prince Charles ur Skogi and after that Ekdalens Amanda Skadi
(the USA's first Silver Mackerel Tabby). Nissekatt cattery was
born. Mary and I continued to breed under this cattery until 1991
when Mary passed away. In 1985 I married Jeff Shaw and in 1991 our
daughter, Tina was born. We continue to breed under Nissekatt
Cattery. Jeff is a computer programmer for New York Life and our
daughter Tina is a Junior at West Forsyth High School. In 2003,
Jeff's company transferred him to their new datacenter in Georgia so we
moved all the cats and a dog to Cumming, GA. I am a substitute
teacher with the Forsyth County School System. My degree is in
Veterinary Technology. This year my daughter and I went to Norway
and the opportunity to meet Else Nylund and Bjorn Steensrud and a
delightful breeder named Ina Selte who took us around and to a cat show
in Lillehammer. It was a wonderful experience and one I hope to
repeat in 2010 for the World Show. We continue to breed on a much
smaller basis and we are very excited to announce that we have a litter
born on August 11, 2008 that goes back to all three of the original cats here
in the States. There are two boys and a girl in the litter.
Sue also does craft shows with food mixes under the name of Three
Friends Kozy kitchen (check out our business page) and has started
consulting for a brand new company called Peddler's Paws which will be
serving up very special treats for all your pets which opens September
1st! |
